Scenario 2

The Scenario

This scenario is historical and happened in 1861 at Front Royal, Virginia.  Basically the Union forces were in depth and caught un-prepared by a Confederate force advancing from a successful fight nearby.  Confederate troops attacked this outpost from 2 sides driving Union forces back across the river and taking both bridges fairly quickly.

Turn 1; The Confederate force arrives on the board and deploys under order with 2 regiments in line and artillery on their left flank.  Further orders for the Confederates fail to happen as the Confederate commander thinks over his attack.  The union player orders his reserve force to deploy into column for the infantry and limber for the artillery.  Further orders fail.

Turn 2; The Confederate commander orders his artillery sections to pound union regiment 1 achieving 1 hit but no suppression.  An attempt to order a second round of fire fails.  The union commander fails to successfully give any order this turn.

Turn 3; The Confederate reserve force of 2 regiments arrives on the road in column.  Further orders to the reserve force fail to affect its move on to the table.  The union commander fails to give any successfully understood orders this turn again.

Turn 4; The Confederate commander move his reserve force forward in column.  On the next order the Confederates combine the fire of two artillery sections and regiments 1 and 2 to achieve 5 hits on union regiment 1 (no suppression and the loss of one stand).  Further Confederate orders fail this turn.  The union commander has a run of luck as his orders to the reserve force are understood 4 times.  The union reserve force moves up and deploys covering the covered bridge along the road.  The next union order fails.

Turn 5; Confederate runners are shot down as all orders fail this turn.  The union commander orders his regiment 2 to refuse their right flank as the Confederate reserve force approaches along the road.  The next union order fails.

Turn 6;  On the next order the Confederates combine the fire of one artillery section and regiments 1 and 2 to achieve 3 hits on union regiment 1 (no suppression and the loss of one stand). Further Confederate orders fail this turn. The Union commander concerned about the gap between his reserve force and his main force orders regiment 2 to retire to establish contact with regiment 3.  A second order successfully re-forms regiment 2 into line between regiment 3 and regiment 1.  Further Union orders fail this turn.

Turn 7; The Confederate commander successfully deploys regiments 3 and 4 inline just out of range of Union regiment 2 but further orders fail this turn.  Sensing that the Confederates are about to charge his position, the Union commander orders his regiment 1 to fall back from the stone wall to the stone wall at the other end of the farm.  Further Union orders fail this turn.

Turn 8; The Confederates order regiments 1 and 2 to charge the stone wall but it has been abandoned by the Union.  The next Confederate order limbers up the artillery piece but no further orders are issued this turn.  The Union commanders fails to react this turn.

Turn 9; The Confederate cavalry arrive on the flank of the Union line this turn.  The Confederate commander orders regiments 3 and 4 to advance and then the cavalry to advance.  Further Confederate orders fail.  The Union commander sees a dire situation and orders his artillery section 2 to fire on the Confederate cavalry and push them back, they achieve a single hit.  The Union player orders his regiment 1 to back to and to their right to tidy up his lines.  Finally, the Union commander order fire from regiments 2 and 3 and his artillery section to fire on Confederate regiments 3 and 4 (6 hits and the loss of 2 stands with no suppression).  Further Union orders fail.

Turn 10; The Confederate commander orders his regiments 1 and 2 and his artillery section to advance to the second stone wall, then a second order to advance again and deployment along the wall.  Next orders his regiment 3 to fire on Union regiment 3 (2 hits, no suppression).  The Confederate regiment 4 conducts a passage of lines through his regiment 3.  Then both battalions of Confederate cavalry dismount and deploy in line.  Finally, the Confederate orders the cavalry and regiment 4 to fire on Union regiment 3 (4 hits with the loss of one stand and suppression).  Further Confederate orders fail.  The Union player orders regiment 2 to fire on Confederate Regiment 4 (3 hits and the loss of 1 stand).  The Union commander orders another round of fire with the artillery section 2 joining in (6 hits and the loss of 2 stands with suppression and finally a fall back).

Turn 11; The Confederate commander orders the dismounted cavalry and regiment 3 to charge the Union regiment 3.  The charge is successful and the Union is pushed back from the road bridge with Union artillery section 3 limbering and falling back and regiment 3 being KO'd in place.  Confederate regiments 1 and 2 are ordered to charge Union regiment 1 forcing it to fall back and allowing the Confederates to take the train bridge.  The Union commander is trapped with regiment 2 on the wrong side of the river.

Aftermath

In the scenario Union Forces actually put up a better fight than they did historically, however that fight led to much greater losses for the Union as one third of their forces where trapped on the wrong river back.  In the actual battle Union forces quickly retreated across the bridge leaving only a few dead behind.
