Modern US Army

American Army

There are four sets of organization for the US army, Pentomic, ROAD, Division 86 and Army XXI. ROAD, Division 86 and Army XXI units practiced cross attachment, so Tank and Mechanized Companies may be fielded with companies from the opposite. Similarly the Brigades are very flexible, and can command from 2 to 5 battalions in these units.  Prior to 1958 all World War Two organizations are in effect except that newer weapons are used.

American Pentomic Battle group 1958

            HQ Company                           1HQ

            Scout Platoon              1 Jeep/MG, 1 M41

            Anti Aircraft Platoon    1 Truck, 1 12.7AAG

            Anti Tank Platoon        2 Jeep/106

Engineer Platoon         1 Truck, 1 Engr, 1 FT

Tank Company                        3 M48 (M47 in USA)

Artillery Battery                       2 105H, 2 Trucks

Note                                         Note this concept was very short lived.  A Cavalry Troop from the Pentomic Armored Cavalry Squadron could be added.  The whole idea on Pentomic ORBATs was for small self-contained battle groups running around the nuclear cleared battlefield engaging in scattered disorganized battles in a post nuclear war.

American Division 86 Tow Light Anti Tank (TLAT) Battalion 1981 to 1993

3 Anti Tank Companies each   4 Jeep/TOW

Note:                                                                            After 1988 HMMV/TOW replaces the jeeps.  TLAT units were formed in the 1981 to provide additional wartime anti tank support to light divisions which lacked the anti-tank punch of the heavy divisions.  4 units were stood up from National Guard infantry battalions: 1/249 (Oregon ARNG), 2/180 (Oklahoma ARNG), 1/122 (Georgia ARNG) and 2/128 (Wisconsin).  10th (Mountain) Infantry Division, 7th (Light) Infantry Division, 101st (Air Assault) Division and 82nd (Airborne) Division each were to receive one of these battalions as round out units during war mobilization.  1/122 almost went to Desert Shield and Gulf War 1.  In fact 1/122 even trained with 82nd Airborne but stayed when the division commander decided against them.  All units were disbanded or re-roled as infantry during the “Great Scale Down” in 1993.  An excellent tactical idea that never got a chance to be implemented, I am a proponent of large numbers of light self propelled ATGMs running around the battlefield under a central control but this concept has now been largely replaced by helicopters.

Note                                                                             Formerly known as IBCT (Interim Brigade Combat Team) they are now SBCT (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) after the name of the LAV mounting a 105mm anti tank gun.  Once complete there will be 5 SBCTs designed to be deployed anywhere in the world in 96 hours complete and ready for war.  It is fair to say that units will be the medium weight punch of the US Army.

Note                                                                             This is a tentative ORBAT most of the equipment for this type of unit is still being designed and tested.  The HumVees are standing in that equipment. 2nd Dragoons (2 ACR) of 18th Airborne Corps is the only light regiment. It is currently held that 2nd Dragoons will become medium as its final ORBAT and remain with 18th Airborne Corps.

American Army XXI Armored Cavalry Squadron (Medium) 2001+

Air Troop                                                         3 OH58D

Anti Tank Company                 3 LAV/TOW

Note                                                                             This is a notional ORBAT most of the equipment for this type of unit is still being designed and tested.  The LAV usage is suspected.  US Army is not currently committed to medium force structure only a light and heavy force structure, so this is provided as a summation of US Army thought on this type of force.  This is a good compromise between the political consideration of light deployable forces and army desire for a heavy punch in theatre.  Note the elimination of the 155mm artillery and the increase in 120mm mortars; this is the first time in US Army history where so much combat power reliance has been placed on a mortar.
